Eating Disorders

Eating disorders include extreme attitudes, behaviours and emotions regarding food and weight issues. They can have life-threatening consequences for both men and women and include anorexia, bulimia and binge eating.

Anorexia Nervosa is characterised by self-starvation and excessive weight loss. The earlier anorexia nervosa is detected the better the chances of recovery are. The health consequences of anorexia nervosa include abnormally slow heart rate and low blood pressure increasing the risk of heart failure; Osteoporosis; Severe dehydration which can lead to kidney failure and growth of a downy layer of hair (lanugo) in an effort to keep the body warm.

Bulimia Nervosa has three primary symptoms. Eating large quantities of food in a short period of time irrespective of feelings of hunger or being full. This is often done in secret and is accompanied by a feeling of being ‘out of control’ while eating. Purging or compensatory behaviour such as self induced vomiting, laxative or diuretic abuse, fasting and excessive exercise often follows these ‘binges’. Sufferers also have an excessive concern with body weight and shape.

The health consequences of bulimia include electrolyte imbalances that can lead to irregular heartbeat and heart failure; gastric rupturing, tooth decay and staining and peptic ulcers and pancreatitis.

Public Speaking

Many people have a real fear of talking in public, whether it’s making a speech at a wedding, giving a professional presentation or speaking in front of a small number of people, public speaking can cause the body to shake, the mind to go blank and physical sickness

Fear of public speaking is a form of social phobia, our natural ‘fight or flight’ response takes over. This unconscious response can cause our throats to feel tight, our hearts to beat faster, sweating, breathlessness, sickness and a number of other symptoms.

We have the ability to re-educate our mind to no longer see public speaking as a threat, and create more appropriate responses for those occasions that require us to talk in public. Sunray Cognitive Hypnotherapy may be able to help. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your requirements.

Confidence and Self Esteem

Self Esteem

Lack of confidence, low self esteem and self-consciousness are all related and affect many areas of our lives.

Perceived lack of self worth, anxiety, stress, inability to think positively all effect how we think about ourselves and others. These thought patterns have consequences as to how capable we feel and how easy it is for us to make decisions.

This can make us feel that we struggle in social situations leading to self-consciousness. Or restrict ourselves in other ways because we feel that we just do not have the confidence to pursue what we want. Some of the common fears and thoughts that accompany confidence issues and low self-esteem are; fear of failure, rejection and a belief that you are not worthy.

Weight Loss

Everyone knows that a healthy diet and plenty of exercise is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. However dieting simply does not work for some people.

The human body is designed to let us know when we are hungry and when we are full. For people that overeat the ‘full’ signs are ignored and they continue to eat. There can be a number of reasons for this, such as eating so fast that the signals of being full are missed or not wanting to waste food ( often taught at an early age).

Other reasons for overeating may include boredom, loneliness, food based rewards or protection. Many of these reasons can be traced back to an emotional event that happened in childhood and has remained locked in their unconscious mind.

Weight Loss

Changing the role food plays and an individuals’ attitude towards it can be the key to long-term and permanent weight loss Sunray Cognitive Hypnotherapy may be able to help. Please feel free to contact us to discuss your requirements.

Stop Smoking

stop smoking

We all know that smoking is bad for our health. Containing over 4000 chemicals including arsenic and cyanide it is almost impossible to imagine anyone voluntarily inhaling such a toxic cocktail.

The reason that people smoke is varied but in most cases it involves an unconscious and flawed decision that smoking is serving a positive purpose. These can include reasons such as ‘I smoke to be social’, ‘I smoke to fit in’, ‘I smoke because it calms me down.’

In essence smokers form a relationship with the cigarette that is beyond the ‘addiction’ of nicotine. Although the relationship is often of no further use or has been outgrown it is the outdated unconscious belief that needs to be addressed and changed.

Stress

The difference between a stressful situation and a challenging situation is our perception of; our ability to manage it; the level of control we feel we have over it; the meaning and significance it has for us.

According to MIND “45 million working days are lost each year through anxiety and stress-related conditions.” Around 1 in 5 people suffers the effects of workplace stress and government research suggests over half a million people a year become ill as a result.

Prolonged and constant stress can cause raised blood pressure, heart attacks, headaches, back pain, and even irritable bowel syndrome.
Each person experiences unique triggers for stress and each has a different limit before stress becomes an issue. Some common triggers are; lack of a work life balance, coping with change or loss, managing work and personal relationships and public speaking.
