Thomas Edison Tested Over 3000 Filaments before He Came Up With His Version of a Practical Light Bulb.
Imagine if you really believed that you could not fail. Any time you didn’t achieve your expected results you saw it as an opportunity to try again and learn from the experience. What would you do that you currently don’t?
“If we all did the things we are really capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves” – Thomas Edison
We negatively label results that don’t meet our original aims as failures, but how much more useful would it be to view them as useful feedback that will enable us to improve? What would you try if you could not fail?
“Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward” – Thomas Edison
If we constantly think in terms of failure or having failed then the chances are that we will not try again or push ourselves to achieve something in the future. It becomes scary and also has a negative effect on our self esteem and confidence. Failure is negative. Feedback on the other hand is positive. It is guidance, it allows us to make mistakes and to gather more information so that we can overcome obstacles and remain on the right path towards achieving our outcome.
If we become used to believing that there is no such a thing as failure and accept instead that we will get useful feedback that keeps us on the road to success then success will be achieved and we will cease to fail. So why not take a leaf from Edison’s book and see what a difference it can make to you!
“Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do in the first place doesn’t mean it’s useless” Thomas Edison
