Bruxism (teeth grinding) is quite a common unconscious habit that affects around 10% of the population. At best, it occurs during temporary periods of stress and stops when the stressful period has passed. Sometimes though the grinding becomes habitual and continues, in spite of having no obvious immediate cause. Depending upon the severity of the grinding, it can lead to complications including pain and limited movement in the jaw; headaches and tooth wear or breakage, so the condition really needs to be tackled. Your dentist may be able to help with mouth guards, but hypnosis is also recommended, to deal with the underlying unconscious behaviour. In many cases hypnosis achieves a positive, long term result.
